Protecting Our Natural Environment

Centerra is committed to environmental stewardship to protect the natural environment and to prevent, minimize, and mitigate the effects of our activities on the land, water, and air. At our British Columbia sites, environmentally responsible mining is central to our company’s values and overall Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) performance. Proactively minimizing environmental impacts through project design, management, and mitigation measures improves operational efficiency, strengthens community relationships, and helps manage permitting and operational costs.

Climate Change

Centerra’s approach to climate change is based on a simple idea: reducing energy use and lowering greenhouse gas emissions benefit both the environment and our business. We recognize that climate change is one of the most pressing concerns for communities, regulators, and investors, and that both physical and transitional climate risks have the potential to affect our British Columbia operations.

Our Climate and Nature Strategy is organized into five main pillars: Governance, Climate Mitigation, Climate Adaptation, Nature, and Disclosure and Engagement. Over the life of a mine, Centerra implements initiatives and allocates capital to reduce energy consumption, carbon emissions, and exposure to the physical impacts of climate change, including those related to water availability. Our approach builds in stages, with regular engagement from internal and external stakeholders, and measurable progress each year.

Waste, Hazardous Materials and Air Pollution

Centerra is committed to managing the waste produced at our British Columbia sites. We integrate reduce, reuse, and recycle practices into our waste management programs and maintain strict controls over hazardous materials. We also monitor and manage air quality to ensure emissions stay within regulatory limits.

Water Stewardship

Centerra believes that access to clean water is a universal human right and that good-quality water is essential to healthy ecosystems and communities. Water conservation is a priority at all our British Columbia sites. At Mount Milligan, water is recycled and treated to reduce freshwater use and to protect local watersheds. Across our BC operations, integrated water management represents a significant ongoing investment in sustainable performance.

Mine Closure and Reclamation

Mining is a temporary land use. From the beginning of each project, Centerra plans for closure and reclamation to restore physical and chemical stability and create conditions for biodiversity recovery and traditional land use. At our British Columbia sites, closure planning includes environmental, social, and economic considerations and ensures that appropriate financial assurances are in place to support long-term reclamation and monitoring.

Biodiversity

Centerra works to avoid or minimize impacts to biodiversity by reducing project footprints wherever possible. Environmental management is built into every stage of our British Columbia operations to ensure that resource use is minimized, and emissions meet or exceed regulatory standards. Through our Climate and Nature Strategy, we support ecological stewardship and collaborate with local communities.

Key focus areas vary by site and are determined through the environmental permitting process. Our environmental teams in British Columbia work with regulators, local experts, and Indigenous Nations to develop site-specific Biodiversity Management Plans that incorporate Traditional Ecological Knowledge and scientific expertise.
